eM-4-Miniatures Cybertech Bunkerbreaker, Phagon, and Savages.

Recently, i've become more and more interested in the oldhammer movement, and decided that now is the time to run straight to eBay and buy myself some minis (note: it doesn't take much to make me buy minis...).

After, what felt like, an age of disappointing auction results i was left empty handed. To avoid further heartbreak i decided to track down some Rogue Trader-alike models so i can start off a small army.

Enter eM-4-Miniatures. And the Pics!

All-in-all they are pretty decent sculpts (not too detailed to stand out against RT models, but then also not amorphous blobs of lead) and the casting on the Phagons (the Beastmen in SPAAAACE) was excellent.

There were a couple of what looks like air bubbles on the Trooper, but they are in places you wouldn't normally see (unless you took him out to dinner first)

Now, the savages...

These are models that i brought with no real distinct purpose. Maybe as Chaos Cultists, or Rogue Traders, or Mercenarys, or Raiders (if i ever collect the tabletop Fallout stuff), or (more obviously) a Necromunda gang.

I'm sure I'll find a use for them somewhere.

The models are all great sculpts, very characterful - the guy with the top-hat and the fat bloke are personal favorites. I look forward to painting them

In conclusion, I'm a very happy customer (so much so, I've placed a second order). I'm interested in seeing their plastics, I'll post up some pictures when they arrive.

Best get painting then...

Mars Attacks Kickstarter!

Look at that! Now, whilst I've backed Mantic's latest Kickstarter, I'm not a huge Mars Attacks fan (it was always more popular stateside than over here). But what i am, is a huge Judge Dredd fan.

Mantic's latest update had this as an upcoming goal.

Well, I'm sold.

Hobby ideas Volume 1: Orcs/Orks

Something that's been of interest to me lately is the idea of Chaos-corrupted Orcs (I mean, look at that picture!), they seem like a fun project to mess around with. I don't know if they'll work better as a 40k or Fantasy force - a fantasy force would fit in well with my United Chaos army project (that I've been working on during my blogging silence), but I 40k one would allow for more individual models, something that an army like this would require.
Another, similar, project would be the Ork Mekanicus Kult. An idea so cool that I can't believe that no one else has done it before (I'm sure many have, but my googling seems to be turning up a blank).
Of course, I can't be doing a 40k Ork army and not have a looted vehicle or two (Deffskulls are my favourite flavour of Ork) - and that Dreamforge Titan I have knocking around is just too tempting....
For the time being tho, I've already got enough on my plate. What with the new Zombicide boxes, the Reaper Bones (that's finally been shipped), Deadzone, Kingdom Death and a whole stack of Kickstarter stuff I've failed to mention (including the Dreadball stuff that keeps getting pushed back in the queue).
Although... With all my Deadzone add-ons, I've got a fairly sizeable Ork army coming my way in November...

Nagash: Not with a bang, but a whimper.

Something that slipped through the cracks whilst everyone was going a bit Vostroyan mad a little while back - The Immortal Necromancer Lord Nagash has finally met his end! Yes, that's right. During the great Collectors Range purge, Nagash himself was one of the casualties. And, because of the amount of hate directed toward his model, its extremely unlikely he'll return (unless Warhammer Forge get their act together).

Yes, yes, i know. The model is, objectively, quite bad and it's removal will bring joy to a great many people (and ruin even more "worst model" lists. [We've still got Vulkan, so all is not lost]) But this still feels like the end of an era.

So here it is, farewell sweet prince and may you find hapSKULLS SKULLS SKULLS SKULLS SKULLS SKULLS.

Painting Zombicide: The Pictures.

Ok so, as promised! Here's some pictures:

First, the second tray of zombies:

Here's the survivors:

Try not to look at Wanda or Amy too hard...
And finally, a great big family group-shot of all the zombies:

Christmases are awkward, to say the least.

I've not had a game with these guys yet, but soon hopefully. Anyway, enough for now. Onward to the next project!

Painting Zombicide: The Long Wait

After (about) two months on hiatus, I'm back! Why way I gone? Mostly boring day-job related stuff. But don't think i've been resting on my laurels whilst the OC has been mothballed! I finished painting the Zombicide Abomination!

Seen here on his first, and last, day at the jam factory.
Not only that! Before painting this guy I painted the second, and final, tray of zombies! Which means I've finished painting my copy of Zombicide!  This project is due a major photodump on all the progress I've made during (and a bit before) the hiatus so expect that as soon as I have the photos.

All this is good news for me (not only because I've proven i can actually finish projects - and it's only taken my 4 months!), since it's been announced that Zombicide Season 2 (+Toxic City Mall) will be shipping a month early! So I've got a month or so's break before I dive back into Zombicide Painting.

In this time I've decided that I will work though another of my Kickstarter hauls, this time Dreadball. I've already made a start on a couple of the teams (Forgefathers and Marauders) and I've painted up a couple of the MVP's so i've got a head start, expect some more posts on them over the next few months.

Anyway, that's all for now!

Painting Zombicide: Game on!

After painting the survivors (pics to come soon), i decided to reward myself with a quick game of Zombicide (since i paint and play in different places, I've not been able to play the game whilst I've been painting the models) - It was a, relatively, simple capture the objectives game. We started with 6 survivors and ended with one, who caught the final objective. All in all, it looked very cinematic*, and cool, with the painted models and has really upped my enthusiasm for painting the final tray of zombies.

(* One problem that came up was zombies getting double activations, due to a lack of models, and killing survivors in droves - thankfully solved by my Kickstarter haul when it arrives)

Anyway, onto the pictures!

Painting Zombicide: One Tray Down!

Ok, so. I finally finished my first tray of zombies. The lessons i've learnt so far? Don't trust that brush-on varnish wont frost your models. As a side note, this was the first time i'd actually seen all the zombies together in a horde (not counting when they were in their tray), and i think they look pretty imposing...

Anyway, onto the zombies!

Painting Zombicide: The Survivors

Now that I've finished my first tray of zombies (pictures in the next update) I thought I'd take a quick break and start on the six survivor models:

Not much to look at now, but I should hopefully get these guys done over the next week or so.

Small update this time, next time I'll post up my completed zombie tray.

Zombicide Season 2 Kickstarter.

So, Zombicide Season 2 is here and on Kickstarter. And it would be remiss of me to not point out that, rather unsurprisingly, it's preforming quite well (it's at $970k at the time of writing).

On the face of it, it looks like we'll be getting 153 new models (including the Zombie Dogz, but not any of the stretch or extras) which, if your pledging to get everything (-the original game) works out at, as base level, of less than $1 per model. Which seems like a fair enough deal to me.

Now, I missed Season 1 on Kickstarter, so I jumped onto backing this within 5 minutes of the campaign opening (just enough time to miss all the early bird specials). IT's slated for a September release which, knowing CMoN, it's likely to be in my hands early October - which is quite a nice deadline for me to paint my Season 1 set.

Full list of what you currently get at the Fugitive ($150) level after the break...

Painting Zombicide: First 8 Down!

I've finished my first 8 Zombicide zombies - now I've just got the remaining 3 lots of 8. Then the other try of zombies. Then the survivors. Then the Abomination. Ok. Good thing no cool new toys have arrived for me recently...

Ahem....

Painting Zombicide - A Horde Approaches

Ok, a quick update on all the hobby goodness I've been getting up to recently;

I left off last time with the first batch of models spray base-coated... and that was about it. Well, since then I've painted on all the block colours - to speed things up i painted them in groups of 8, picking out one or two main colours to use with each group.

I also dipped all of the models and matted them down (which turned out to be more hassle than i expected) and highlighted them all up, see? It has been a productive week!

Base-coated and ready to go!

And here's the post-dip models in all their shiny glory!
And here's my Progress Fatty!
I also began painting the blood onto them using Tamiya Clear Red paint - love that stuff.

Once I've finished the blood, all I've got left to do is the bases and the first 32 are good to go! Hopefully I'll get them all done before the next Zombicide Kickstarter launches...

See you next time!

Plague drones of Nurgle

I love them. All GWs Nurgle stuff has been consistently brilliant.

The skull cannon/chariot I'm not sold on - I would of preferred the cannon to look more like the old Epic one (and I might model mine up like that anyway).

The Tzeench stuff is... Well. It's GWs Tzeench stuff. It's odd looking, and not in a good way.

Slaanesh's offering is, we'll, just a big deamonette. Not much more I can add to it really... Except that it has stupid hair.

New deamons?

If the rumours (below) are true, I'm as excited as my wallet is worried - I've had some fantasy daemons up my sleeve for a while now (Skaven pushed ahead of them for a while) and these new releases might be the jump start my army needs, the Plague Drones seem very interesting indeed (here's hoping they're more like big Nurglly flys than FWs robotic cashew, as good as that model is its not very Fantasy).

Painting Zombicide - the beginning.

Recently, the vast majority of my free time has been dedicated to one thing: Zombicide. It's a pretty fantastic game really (some game balance issues aside). But one thing has been nagging at me, whilst it looks cool enough, it'd look cooler if the models were painted. - Uh oh.

So with that, I embarked on a quest to paint my way though my Zombicide box (all 70 or so models of it). But, to avoid me spending the rest of my life on this, I decided to try and speed-paint and dip my way though, and document my progress over the next few posts.

For the sake of my sanity I decided to break the painting down into three groups. Two sets of 32 zombies and the 6 survivors and Abomination.

But anyway, here's the progress so far:
Step 1: the 'before' shot. All the models I need to paint.

Step 1: The first 32 zombies primed and ready to go! - Also some bonus extra models in there too.

And here they are primed and base coated. Ready for painting.
In total this all, so far, has taken me about an hour - including drying times and test models, etc.

Well, that's all for now. I'll be painting these first 32 during my lunch breaks and free evenings - hopefully I'll have some more progress soon!

A quick Hobby Update!

Just a quick update on what I've been working on. This month, as per my hobby resolution, i haven't really been messing around with much GW stuff (but, from the leaks, that's about to change);

Firstly, I've dipped back into Kings of War and decided to start putting together a Undead Samurai army, I've only got a Necromancer with 10 skeletons and 5 Zombies so far (these models take much longer to put together than i expected!) - Once I've found them, the Wraiths in the background are going to get some old Rackham Oni Masks.

Also, when I've not been messing around with undead samurai, I've started to pur together a Malifaux Arcanist Rail Crew Box (With the Rail Golem and Willie):
I've gone for a railway (no surprises there really...) theme for the bases - I was googling ideas for basing and found the idea to use model railway tracks, and they do look pretty cool. Awful to cut tho.

Anyway, that's all for now! I've got some gushing to do about the new WoC models, but I'll save that for another post.

One last thing! My copy of Sedition Wars has arrived!

I'm very impressed, although there is quite a bit of warping of my models .Which is a bit of a disappointment (a disappointment that's becoming a more and more common occurrence with models made from not-HDPE plastics - my most recent batch of Reaper Bones models has a couple that needed re-setting), but one that should be easily fixed (although, to play devils advocate, it's a bit like the Finecast situation - even though the fix is relatively simple, i shouldn't have to do it. But that's a different post all together.)

My year in hobby - a roundup

Turns out, the world didn't end...
So as 2012 drew to a close (noticeably un-apocalypsey) I decided to sit down and take a look back over the last 12 months of hobby (the awkward past-tense is because I missed the end of the year. Sorry about that) and make some 2013 hobby-resolutions.

That many
Well, looking back over the last year it's fair to say that my entire hobby life has been dominated by a single word - Kickstarter - I've personally backed 17 projects (it would of been 18, but I missed the Zombicide one)

Overall I'm pleased with my kickstartering, and I'm happy that I helped (although in a small way) to push though some cool products (2013 is the year of the board game, take my word on that). One downside is that kickstarter has contributed, in a major way, to the Hobby ADD that I, and most hobbyists, suffer from (more on that in the resolutions).

As well as all that GW have released Dark Vengeance and whatever incredibly long title they've given the Hobbit boxed set. Both of these are pretty cool (I'm certainly going to pick up the Hobbit box as soon as a have the cash spare) but Dark Vengeance have helped me in two ways. Firstly it gave my the right kickstart (arh, it's everywhere!) a Lost and the Damned army for 40k, and secondly the bits helped me establish my small eBay shop as a genuine place that people goto to buy stuff, we have repeat customers and everything now! (More on that at the end).

Anyway, enough looking back, lets look forward with the hobby resolutions!

1: Choose a damn army, and finish it! - I've got a pile of unpainted models that's just going to get bigger and the total number of painted armies I have is still zero. In 2013 I want to redress the balance slightly and end the year with at least 1 painted army.

And, in direct contradiction to the above...

2: Get into some of the smaller games systems - the initial buy in for 40k and Fantasy is too high now, so I'm going to investigate some of the smaller systems (I.e. Kings of Warpath, HoMachine, Malifaux, Dystopian Legions) and see how I like them.

3: Make a games table and play some games - I've finally got a hobby room now (so I can stop doing my hobby at work), all I need is a games table (related to resolution 2, I can only spare 4'x4' so the skirmish style games would fit just fine).

4: board games! - I've already pronounced 2013 to be the year of the board game (just up there, see?) so it's time for me to put my money where my mouth is and actually buy some.

I think that's all the resolutions for now (hobby ones anyway, I've got a re-occurring rowing machine related one from outside of the hobby) but what else for the future?

Well, I mentioned above that I have a small eBay store called Pandemonium Games. I run it mostly in my spare time (my main jobs are running an online store that sells recycled and environmentally friendly gifts and operating a Waterjet Cutter - how do you end up with jobs so diverse? Finish university with a BA) but recently it's started to punch above its weight and is beginning to prove itself as more than a distraction and is starting to turn into a viable business.

Whilst currently we're no Wayland, or Troll Tader, or Bitz Box we are starting to carve out our own little niche. All of this is great news, because owning a games store would be pretty awesome. To further help this, once we've got the website up and running, I'm going to make Officina Chaotica the official blog of my store.

What this means to anyone reading this (and judging from my google stats, I'm talking directly to a single Russian spambot) is that very occasionally (once every couple of months probably) I'll post something along the lines of "Hey! This is a thing we have, if you want it, you can buy it here!".

The upside to all this is that since this will technically be a company blog I'll be able to work on it during work hours, so I'll be able to post more! And, if I'm cheeky enough, I could try and argue that me doing hobby is actually me working on content for the blog. That might not fly though.

Happy, belated, New Years and have a great 2013!

Matt.
